The Many Faces of Goss’s Wilt in 2011
When a new disease like Goss’s wilt moved into the area in 2009 and 2010, I did my homework to get ready for this year’s episode! I discovered that Goss’s wilt is unlike any other corn disease when it comes to a “traditional or normal look” to lesions or affected plants, so I started my library of pictures. Notable quotes include: “It’s like a flesh eating disease” said Mark Bernard, Crop Consultant, New Richland, Minnesota, commenting while on the Pro … Continue reading

Crop Stress Continues to Mount… “Every Drop Counts”
Sometimes getting caught up in growing degree units (GDUs) can be too much of a good thing. In spite of the cooler temperatures, crop stress continues to mount for corn and soybeans. Heat stress created pollination and kernel tip back issues in corn and limited pod set for soybeans in July, but water is the name of the game during grain fill in August. The impact is a little different for each crop. Drought stress during R3-R5 in corn limits … Continue reading

A Developing Drought in Southern Minnesota?
Precipitation for the month of July shows a developing dry pattern across southern Minnesota. Early July Areas colored yellow and orange on the map missed critical rainfall during early July and have the potential to be the most affected by heat stress during pollination and early grain fill. Compacted fields, corn on corn rotations, and coarser soils are currently suffering the most potential yield loss from dry top soil conditions. Keep in mind: Ear size is adjusted through R3. Lower … Continue reading

You Knew They Were Coming – Soybean Aphid Alert
Soybean aphid season in Minnesota is upon us once again in 2011. This year is a real testament to the effectiveness of CruiserMaxx® Beans insecticide/fungicide seed treatment from several angles. This seed treatment continues to perform as we have come to expect by protecting seedlings early on from disease and by delaying aphid establishment. Fields planted with untreated seed are quickly reaching economic thresholds of 250 aphids per plant. Fields where CruiserMaxx Beans seed treatment was used normally delays aphid thresholds … Continue reading

An Eye on the Crop: Evaluating Seedling Growth
Yield preservation starts when the planter rolls and ends when the combine stops at the end of harvest. I have found that an extended planting season is often very distracting. Heading into the end of May, it will be time to monitor stand emergence and track several early season pests. Planting the crop over a long period of time can set up extended scouting and response windows. Good record keeping becomes more important when monitoring the crops progress as well … Continue reading

Agriculture Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow
Having grown up on a third-generation family farm, I guess you could say that farming is in my blood or it has deep roots. My experiences learning to drive the ‘49 Chevy pick-up truck, the WD-45, trapping pocket gophers, 4-H and county fairs and even tractor pulls directly or indirectly influenced my career decision to work in the ag sector. My parents pretty much mandated that I get a college degree, but my career path view was very narrow when I … Continue reading

Supercool Soybean Aphids
Are soybean aphids keeping you up at night in January? Well, maybe they shouldn’t be. From time to time I remind myself about the benefits of a long, cold winter. Take insects, for example. A good wind chill really slows them down and we seldom have issues with the really nasty bugs found in many tropical winter getaway paradise locations. Teeth-chattering temperatures exterminate many seasonal invaders from the south. Unfortunately, cold weather doesn’t destroy many of the most damaging insects … Continue reading

How to Rate Hybrids for Late-Season Harvestability
Do you remember when late-October storms changed the landscape in your neighborhood? Corn fields from standing to tangled and blown down. And who could forget the massive Halloween snow storm almost 20 years ago that brought harvest to a stand-still? I’ve come to use terms like “Stand N’ Dry”, “Stick N’ an Ear” or “Snow Corn” to describe hybrids designed to best withstand the onslaught of wind and snow. Selecting a few products for late-season harvest management or an extended … Continue reading

Soybean Aphid Update from Minnesota
As of August 3, it appears that aphids are making their move across much of the Minnesota area, especially in areas receiving less rainfall over the past 30 days. Winged adult migration is ongoing, so if you treated early be sure to continue scouting because you’re not out of the woods yet. For maximum yield it’s important to monitor fields and protect through the R5 stage. What is R5? Basically it’s when bean plants are done flowering. See the chart … Continue reading

Aphid Scouting
It’s time to add soybean aphid scouting to the to-do list. As of July 16, infestation levels have varied across Minnesota from near threshold to almost zero found. In visiting with a crop consultant from Owatonna, Minn. who covers south-central and southeastern Minnesota, he commented on the benefits that he saw from the soybean seed treatments in this year’s crop. He also noted that aphid levels were still low in fields he was scouting. At an Aphid Management System ™ … Continue reading
